Note: Due to Shoot Out regulations, only registered team members can be listed in the official credits that get posted online and provided to news outlets.

The formula is simple.

The Shoot Out dares filmmakers to come to Boulder to make a short film on video in 24 hours. Filmmakers have from 6 pm Friday night until 6 pm Saturday night to complete and hand in their film.  Given the time restrictions, filming must be on video format and the final product dubbed onto the MiniDV tape supplied.

What makes a winning shoot out film?

How Does It Work?

The Shoot Out is more than a film festival. You, the participants are the festival, as you join in the fast filmmaking process. Participants of all walks of life, families, students and filmmakers will be pitted against the clock, against other filmmakers, and against themselves. The ultimate film challenge is here! The only question remains…are you up for The Shoot Out 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival? A 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival means:You have 24 hours to make a short film\video happen, not 48 or 72 but a fast and furious 24 hours.

We leveled the playing field with NO editing allowed. Just pick up a camera and shoot. Proven and organized process that guarantees you will have fun!

Please note: Film must run 7 minutes or LESS, including titles and credits. Editing must be done in camera. See FAQ definition of in-camera editing. You must use 5 of the 11 possible mandatory locations or props. One of the items must be in the first 30 seconds. You must supply final dub on serial numbered MiniDV tape supplied.

How Much Does It Cost?

There are a couple different fee structures for entry. When a team signs-up, the entry fee covers one participant. Additional team members pay a per-person rate. Each registered team member receives (1) one comp ticket for the Sunday awards screening and makes them eligible for any categorical awards i.e. Best Actor. Additional tickets are available for $14.75 each.

$50.00 FOR 17 and UNDER. Each additional is $20.00 (Two-thirds of the team must be 17 or under to qualify.)
$100.00 FOR 18 AND OVER. Each additional is $25.00
$125.00 FOR 3 MEMBERS OF THE SAME FAMILY. Each additional is $20.00.

*Plus a 5% Admissions tax for the City of Boulder.

Proof of age, student I. D., and/or Family relationship may be requested.

[Info Subject to Change.]

One scenario: Paul Smith and Sue Jones are a film-making team. They list Jones as Director and Smith as responsible for all other categories. They will pay $100 for the first person and $25 for each additional team member. So the entry fee for their two-person team is $125. If Jones and Smith enter as a “17 and under team,” the fee will be $50 for the first person and $20 for each additional team member—for a total of $70.

Supported in part by the Boulder County Arts Alliance, a grant from the Boulder Arts Commission, an agency of the Boulder City Council.
