As the Executive Director, my purpose with The Shoot Out 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival is to provide the community with a unique way to create, participate in, and share their art. We are creating a special and exciting way for community residents to involve themselves in a start-to-finish artistic process regardless of their experience level. Hopefully this blog will:

• encourage participation in this uniquely Boulder event.
• provide knowledge on filmmaking best practices, notices of special events, and behind the scenes rambles.
• create a place for dialog with all members of the community interested in filmmaking.

Fast Film at New Vista High, Pre-Event Workshop, October 4 2008

The Shoot Out 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival Boulder in association with Looking Glass Arts is excited to announce a pre-Shoot Out workshop, Fast Films at New Vista High. This event is designed to help prepare the 17 & under filmmakers for The Shootout Boulder which will occur on October 10-12, 2008.

The day-long event will inspire young film-makers to make a fast film while teaching them the methodology of successful short-form storytelling, lighting, directing, and in-camera editing. Special emphasis will be paid to The Shoot Out’s official format and requirements. The workshop is a great way to help young filmmakers find their vision, learn problem solving skills, and meet new friends. After this event, students should have a head-start on preparing for the upcoming Shoot Out the next weekend. (For more information on the Shoot Out, visit www.theshootoutboulder.com)

What we provide (this is subject to change)
three stations for audio dubbing including a variety (not all) adapter cables, monitor, mixer, microphones; one Final Cut Pro 5.04 Macintosh computer station. Wireless internet connection.

Random Helpful Tips:
* Bring your own hard drive and cables is editing on the computer. (remember that FAT32 drives can be read by a Macintosh, but only will capture up to 4-GB of data before giving weird messages.

* Remember to charge your batteries and bring your AC adapter.

* Be CERTAIN that your camera can record back because extra decks may not be available.

* HDV tapes will not work in the tape players.

* Bring your own music, extra CDs and DVDs (we will sell them to you for $5.00 each)

* Remember to record your rough-cut movie on your own tape. Save the Shootout Tape to record the final cut of your movie. It’s a hassle if you record your rough-cut on your Shootout tape. (we will have tapes for $10.00 each – don’t forget tape!)

$50.00 for two 30-minute sessions
$50.00 for one hour on the computer (remember it takes about 20 minutes just to capture and record back to tape)

There are no reservations:
This is “first come, first served” from Saturday 10am to 5pm and we will try to have stations available on the hour or half-hour. A priority list will be kept like at a restaurant, but spots won’t be held.

A Short History Behind TSOB 2008 Poster

I worked with the artist, Keith Tucker back in early 1990s when I was in Hollywood working for MetroLight Studios.  Keith was the storyboard artist on a project called Super Squirrels which was going to relaunch Mickey Rooney career again as peanut butter powered super squirrel.  While the project never got picked up by the networks (this was before Cartoon Network), it exposed me to Keith’s amazing and facile talent as a storyboard artist and cartoonist.  A year ago we got back in touch again after I noticed his clever editorials in the Boulder Weekly, and when it became time again to design our fifth year poster, I asked Keith if he would get involved.  He is now living in Portland, Oregon.  So please enjoy the fruits of efforts as you see how he went from a simple drawing to a fully colored illustration using Photoshop.
